Resource Evaluation

Technology has developed over the years and its affordances allow for information to be easily accessed by almost anyone. Today our students use the many resources offered through technology in a variety of ways. The skills acquired during school will most likely follow them into their chosen careers as well as be used for social aspects of their lives. Students must be able to effectively evaluate resources in order to synthesize information and to think critically about what they read and hear to identify reliable resources for the information to seek answers to their questions (Dobler et al., 2015).

As a primary teacher, I want to provide my students with resources that help my students to meet the academic goals of each project and set the foundational blocks for identifying reliable and useful resources as they learn to navigate the digital world. Like anything else we do in our classrooms planning is essential for the use of technology. We must first consider what devices are available (Coiro et al., 2019). I used the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Framework) framework for my plan. Using this framework the teacher first decides upon goals, strategies, and assessments followed by purposeful selection of technology (Johnson, 2014). I chose resources that I believe will best help support the teaching strategies and digital needs of my students to find the “just right” fit  (Johnson, 2014). I have chosen resources that will help my students develop communication, comprehension, and collaboration skills while applying critical thinking evident in their own creations (Dobler et al., 2015).

I have evaluated three of the online resources that I will use for my implementation plan that I shared in my last blog post. I evaluated the National Geographic, PebbleGo, and Epic Books resources. By evaluating the resource I am confident all of these resources will provide my struggling readers with adequate information to meet the goals of the project and support their needs as readers to help develop comprehension of the text. The link to my evaluation is provided below.
